The Fall of Malygos & Naxxramas Defeated

Place holder Pic - more coming
In Wrath of the Lich King there are 2 main raiding story threads. There is the over arching storyline that the Lich King is extending his influence and icy grip in an attempt to take over the world. The Lich King’s forward forces are based in the raid instance of Naxxramas, currently attacking Wintergarde Keep. The second is that the leader of the Blue Dragon Flight: Malygos, is trying to remove the ability for mortals to control magic as he has deemed them unworthy. Malygos resides in the raid instance “The Eye of Eternity”.
Naxxramas
Naxxramas is the first chapter in the Lich king story. If it was up to OSD we probably would have asked Mega to crash Dalaran in to the Undead Citadel. With it having no aerial defence to speak of it seems like a great plan however those mages are very proud of their shiny floating city and so we do it the hard way; straight through the front door. It was probably a short sighted plan anyway, as facing Arthas in heroic 5 man gear is probably not a good idea. I digress….
The guild cleared both the 10 man normal & 25 man heroic versions some time ago but it’s nice to look back. I remember Braal saying: “Naxxramas is an instance with one boss (Thaddeus) and trash that drop epics”. It’s hard not to agree after killing many bosses on the first try and Sapphiron (heroic) with only 4 healers last week.
It is safe to say the guild is viewing Naxxramas as a nice casual start to WotLK’s raiding.
- It is very forgiving if you make a mistake which means it’s easier and quicker to learn an encounter.
- It allows you to pick up those essential skills such as moving while fulfilling your role and stepping out of/into those pretty graphical effects.
- The ability to run the instance in both normal and heroic modes mean people are geared fast and can quickly get to a useful level.
I think it’s important to say we have had fun in Naxxramas (and continue too do so). It looks good and the boss mechanics are interesting from a technical point of view. It’s also nice to see an instance that many players never got to see in classic WoW.
From the birth of “Spider Jist” to the 3 hour Saturday clear it’s been a blast.
Malygos
Where the Malygos story is concerned, we don’t want our toys taken away from us. When we stand before the Lich King, what use would a mage be if they couldn’t cast their refreshment table? Or a warlock if they couldn’t make a “scary door” to summon others? (I think they may have damage dealing abilities but we can’t be sure of this). Although not inherently evil, Malygos is a threat to the safety of Azeroth and must die. We can’t take only hunters and melee to a raid encounter with a stack of bandages… can we?
When we stepped into the 25 man (heroic) version of “The Eye of Eternity” for the first time last Sunday evening, little did I know that later I would be viewing the remains of a fallen dragon. I think spending one night on a new boss that, with the probable exception of Sartharion with 3 drakes up, is supposed to be the most difficult boss in WotLK is quite an achievement.
If you mix in facts like;
- The majority of people had never been to the 10 man version.
- The guild had only been to the 10 man version 3 time total.
- Very few people had practiced the daily.
It was quite a night.
Being the “Reckless, Foolish mortals” Malygos claimed us to be, we destroyed the one thing that keeps magic in check… what repercussions will that have? We can’t be sure but knowing the way things normally work out in Azeroth, OSD has probably opened a path for some new unspeakable evil to invade… great.
The Near Future
The Lich king will have to wait patiently atop Icecrown Citadel while we gear up in Uldar. The guild hope it will be another step up in difficulty as any the sense of achievement and any real reason for raiding is removed if anyone can roll in and “pew pew pew” everything. Having a set of shiny gear looks nice but really, who cares about gear beyond being capable of the next encounter?
We are now gearing for Uldar and we will be ready.
